For the 2021 edition of Art Basel Miami, Galerie Mitterrand is delighted to present a solo exhibition of Francisco Sobrino in the Survey section.

Francisco Sobrino was born in Spain in 1932, he left for Argentina in 1946, where he studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires. He was an iconic representative of Kinetic art, particularly through his involvement with the Group for Research in Visual Art (G.R.A.V.), of which he was one of the founding members in Paris in 1960 (with François Morellet and Julio le Parc). Since 2016, Galerie Mitterrand is the representative of the Estate of Francisco Sobrino in France. A retrospective of his work, Modus Operandi, curated by the french curator Mathieu Poirier, was inaugurated in 2016 at the gallery in Paris.

In 2019, on the initiative of the gallery, the first major retrospective of his work in France took place at l’Espace de l’art Concret in Mouans-Sartoux and a first major monograph was published by the parisian art editor Dilecta. For his solo exhibition at Art Basel Miami, Galerie Mitterrand would like to bring together a selection of works made by Sobrino in the 60’s and 70's. Those rare unique sculptures show the most interactive, kinetic and playful aspect of Sobrino’s work. Those sculptures reflect his radical, systematic and minimalist approach which took inspiration as much from the historic avantgarde movements – Constructivism, Bauhaus, Dada, Neo-plasticism – as it did from the cognitive sciences – the psychology of form, information theory, phenomenology of perception. All of them are coming directly from the artist’s Estate.
