Les Lalanne share the feeling that sculpture, and more generally artwork, can have a function. Their whole career is stretched by the desire to restore a familiar dimension to sculpture - too long sacralised- , a possible use. You look at it, you touch it, you open it, you sit on it, you lay on it, you eat on it, you wear it... Nature, especially the animal world, provides them an infinity of all known forms. Sheeps, monkeys, rhinos, donkeys, camels, toads, hippos, cats... form a repertoire that Les Lalanne submit to the constraints of decorative art with humor.
Claude Lalanne was born in Paris in 1925. She lives and works in Ury, France.
Claude has frequently worked with Yves Saint-Lauent during the 60's-70's. Claude and François-Xavier are working with Peter Marino since 1980 and created for him in Southampton a rich garden of some thirty of their sculptures. After a first show at la Galerie J in Paris in 1964, they presented their sculptures at Alexandre Iolas in Paris, New York, Milan, Geneva, and Athenes from 1965 to 1979. They are bound to the Galerie Mitterrand since the early 90's. The Arts Décoratifs in Paris showed the diversity of their work during a retrospective in 2010. Their works feature in many exhibitions : Decorum, tapis et tapisseries d?artistes (Shangai 2014, Paris 2013) and Art Institute, Chicago (1967).
